Drastic changes in election dates and filing rules were
signed into effect Friday, December 16, 2011, by the San Antonio Federal Court.
All of these
changes became necessary due to that same court overstepping its responsibility
in November, in effect "legislating from the bench" with the State House, State
Senate, and Congressional maps. The U.S. Supreme Court agreed to stay the
court's maps and to hear an appeal from Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott.
Changes
in filing dates and rules
- Filing closed Monday, December
19, 2011, at 6 p.m.
- However, after the district maps
are finalized sometime in January or February, filing for all offices will
re-open with a deadline of February 1, 2012.
- During the re-opened filing
period, candidates may withdraw their applications and their filing fee will be
returned to them. Candidates also may adjust their applications if the new
district maps necessitate an adjustment. New candidates also may file.
Changes
in election cycle dates
- December 20, 2011 drawing
for order on the ballot is CANCELLED.
- Deadline to file during
re-opened filing period is February 1, 2012, at 6 p.m.
- Candidate drawing for order on
the ballot will be Thursday, February 2, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. in the Commissioners
Courtroom.
- Primary Election date is April
3, 2012.
- Runoff Election date is June 5,
2012.
All of these
dates are subject to change if the district maps are not finalized in time.
